ReSoURCE
Project long title
Refractory Sorting Using Revolutionizing Classification Equipment

Project description
The project ReSoURCE aims to develop an innovative automated sorting technology for the recycling of used refractory materials and tries to implement a new standard in the refractory recycling industry while contributing to a more sustainable use of primary raw materials and promoting a circular economy. This will be achieved by combining technologies such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and hyperspectral imaging and by implementing artificial intelligence (AI) software. Applying this multi-sensor-based sorting equipment will reduce landfilling or downcycling of secondary raw materials.

Aims of the project
As part of the international project consortium, the chair of waste processing technology and waste management is leading one of the 11 work packages regarding the description and analysis of the current European waste management system of spent refractories and identifying potential improvement approaches. Furthermore, a chemical and mineralogical characterisation of different types of used refractory materials is carried out. As soon as the first version of the sorting plant is tested with used refractory material, the sorting will be evaluated regarding yield, purity and types of impurities.
