CD-Labor GECCO2
Project long title
Waste-based geopolymer construction materials in the CO2-neutral circular economy
Project description
The project GECCO2 „waste-based geopolymer construction materials in the CO2-neutral circular economy“ deals with the generation of geopolymer building materials by using unexploited secondary raw materials and mineral waste. Geopolymers, also known as alkali-activated materials, represent an opportunity to create new environmentally friendly heavy-duty building materials. Therefore, those materials possess a higher resistance towards inorganic and organic acids. They should be developed as alternative to cement-bound building materials and subsequently should be used in special application in the building industry with high chemical and physical environmental requirements. A typical application area using those new building materials would be the production of sewage pipes.
Aims of the project
The goal is to find mineral waste streams which are suited to generate CO2-neutral geopolymer building materials following the concept of circular economy. Accordingly, the secondary raw materials and waste are first characterized mineralogically and chemically and reactivity tests are carried out, followed by preparation of the materials using various preparatory steps. The generated building materials in turn will be characterized, their environmental compatibility will be investigated, and a life cycle analysis will be carried out.
