RECOMET – Recovery of Metals

Project description

Within the project RECOMET (Recovery of Metals) which is funded by the FFG within the frame of the program „Future Production“ it is investigated which (potentially) critical raw materials (Be, Mg, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn, Cr, Al, Ga, In, rare earth elements (REE), Ge, Sb, Nb, Ta, W, V, Mo, platinum group elements (PGE)) from rinsing waters can be reduced by and/or adsorbed, but in any case fixed on granulated pig iron by a fluid-bed reactor (Figure project sketch).

Project results

  1. The principal suitability of the ferroDECONT process to recover critical metals from waste water was proven on a fundamental level,
  2. Suitable waste waters from five Austrian companies were identified, quantified and characterized
  3. Chromium, zinc, vanadium, niobium, molybdenum, cobalt, indium, nickel and neodymium have been identified as technically and economically fixable critical metals in Austria
  4. Reaction kinetics were accelerated due to optimization of the flow regime by increased flow and turbulence
  5. Application of chemicals was avoided via physical phase separation by hydrocyclone and matrix separator and
  6. The association of the critical metals fixed in the concentrate predominantly with lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) was proven.
