BottlePose
Project long title
Possibilities for the implementation of the EU requirements regarding beverage containers, deposit system and reusable packaging
Project description
The pollution of the ocean with plastic waste is progressing. The Single Use Plastic Directive of the EU (EU 2019/904) should counteract this littering.
In the research project BottlePose (possibilities for the implementation of the EU requirements regarding beverage containers, deposit system and reusable packaging), AVAW, together with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU) and the technical office Hauer deal with the implementation of the directive in Austria on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology.
The directive itself states that disposable plastic bottles must have a separate collection rate of 77 % by the year 2025 and 90 % by 2029. Furthermore, by 2025, a 25 % proportion of recycled material should be included in the production of PET bottles. At present, 45,000 tonnes of PET beverage bottles are circulated annually in Austria, of which 65 % are collected separately and 53% recycled. Thus, Austria must enforce vast and substantial measures to achieve the EU's goal.
Aims of the project
The aim of the research project BottlePose is to find ways to improve the separate collection of beverage packaging within Austria so that a collection rate of 90 % is achieved and littering is reduced. In addition, possibilities for the promotion of reusable systems will be developed.
