Project long title

Establishment of a 2-stage biotechnological process for the production of (iso)butanol from CO2 and waste materials.

Project description

By converting CO2 from industrial waste gas sources into biofuels, an innovative bioprocessing solution is to be developed which on the one hand replaces fossil fuels and on the other fixes CO2 and thus relieves the environment from two sides.
The chair AVAW is working to raise the potential of the latter for Austria for the production of isobutanol by a combination of industrially generated CO2 and a co-substrate from waste and residual waste material flows.

Figure 1: Annual quantities of individual biogenic waste types in Austria (from left to right):

  • separately collected biogenic municipal waste
  • biogenic fraction in residual waste
  • leftovers
  • fats/oils of animal-/plant-based origin
  • waste/residues food
  • waste/residues natural stimulants
  • slaughterhouse waste
  • municipal sewage sludge
  • sludge from biogas plants

Aims of the project

  • Identifying waste and residual streams that could serve as potential co-substrates for biotechnological CO2 fixation
  • Description of the characteristics of the different material streams (in particular waste from food production, agricultural residues, leftovers, dairy waste and separately collected biogenic waste from households)
  • Survey of the annual volume of these different streams
